Thoughts

So many happy memories. I shall miss his card at Christmas with a little note of what had been happening and sometimes some photos. David and my late husband Shaun met through a mutual love of jazz, in fact Shaun was a drummer too. They also shared a great love of photography. David and Joan did our wedding photographs, I think we may have been one of their first clients in 1962. We spent lots of time together while we were still in Cornwall and were delighted when they came to our 30th anniversary ''bash " in 1992. We moved to Scotland in 1997 and then to France for 13 years in 2002. Obviously we saw less of them, but always visited when back in Cornwall. Since Shaun died and I returned to my home county, I have kept in touch with David, enjoying tea and cake in his cottage on several occasions and obviously still sending Christmas cards. David was a lovely man, talented in so many ways.He was a good friend over many years. I shall miss chatting with him.

“THOUGHTS FROM TWO SISTERS, NORMA & VIV” David and Joan were life long friends of our late Mum and Dad, Stan and Joyce. They met while living in London, sharing a love of jazz. It would be fair to say that David and Joan played a crucial part in our lives. Joan encouraged Norma to apply for a job with B.A. as the stewardess on the Penzance helicopter service to the Scilly Isles, which meant a move down from London to live with them. Subsequently, Norma transferred to Heathrow and married Nigel, a pilot with British Airways, who in turn introduced Viv to a fellow pilot, Geoff. Both were blessed to have long and happy marriages and all down to David and Joan and the Penzance helicopter! We will always be indebted to David and Joan for these turns of events in our lives. David will be deeply missed. Norma and Viv

I recently learned the sad news of David’s passing, through a copy of a letter to Margaret Davies ( my ex - wife ) emailed to me by our Daughter ( Sarah Woodget ne Todd ) originally sent to Margaret by Jon Wills, David’s Nephew. Margaret & I were regular visitors to David’s gallery, in the front room of his cottage in Pendeen, during visits to our friends in Newlyn in the 1970 ‘s, and through our mutual interest in the Cornish scenery, and photography, we became quite good friends. David and his wife were very gentle, peace loving people, driven by a love of everything Cornish, it’s history, it’s people, and it’s flora and fauna ! They also loved cats, and Citroen 2CV motor cars ! David was a talented artist, and photographer , and his wife developed an excellent reputation for Wedding photography in the area. In the 1970s David was also Official Photographer, for the local Tin Mine , close to the famous Crown Mines , in Pendeen. He photographed, a visit by HM Queen Elizabeth , when she visited Pendeen to re-open the Mine to commercial Tin mining, during the 1970s, and rightly so, was very proud of the resultant photographs. He also took many photographs showing the tough working conditions that the men working underground endured during those years. He offered to take me underground for a visit to the extensive workings, but unfortunately, at the time, I refused ! A decision, which, in hindsight, I greatly regret ! David could be a little “ eccentric “, now and then ! He had a friend, who he maintained was a Concorde pilot, and he once took me out into the the front garden, so that we could both wave energetically, at the low level pass of the beautiful plane , piloted , of course, by his friend, as it flew over Lands End, and out across the Atlantic on one of its many trips to New York . I was never quite sure of the complete authenticity, of his antics here, as he always seemed to have one of those wicked “ twinkles “ in his eye, whenever he spoke about it ! David was a talented jazz drummer, who moved down to Cornwall from a quite different life in London, he was witty, intelligent, well educated, articulate, and a loving husband, who will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to know him, and my sincere condolences go out to Jon, his nephew, and to all his family, and friends. Most sincerely, Robert Todd.
